This Northern White Rhino is near extinction, with death of the last male this year, 2018.
Only 2 females remain and scientists are hopeful to impregnate one through artificial insemination. Poaching of these beautiful animals remains high and is being driven by the demand for rhino horn in Vietnam where it is used as an aphrodisiac and status symbol to display someone’s success and wealth. No medicinal value has been proven, as the horn contains keratin, much like a horse hoof.
